Ocotlán
Ocotlán de Morelos is located on highway
175, 30 kilometers from the city of Oaxaca.
Fridays are the traditional market days
and visitors can find fruits and vegetables,
handcrafts such as pottery, baskets, hardware,
cutlery, leather goods, hats, wood carvings,
traditional footwear and beverages such
as mezcal and tejate (a cool refreshing
drink based on toasted corn and cacao with
a waxy foam floating on top).
Of special interest are the temple and the
Dominican ex-convent built towards the end
of the 16th century and recently restored
by the municipal authorities with the help
of Rodolfo Morales, the world famous painter
born in this colonial city. His house is
now a museum-workshop where many of the
artist’s paintings are on permanent exhibit.
