Mitla
The structures at this archaeological site,
located 28 miles southeast of Oaxaca, are
belived to have been originally built by
the Zapotec population and completed by
the Mixtecs. The name Mitla comes from the
Aztec word meaning 'The place of Dead'.
The ruins in the area, Unlike other ancient
pre-Hispanic structures, the walls at Mitla
are made of inicid stone mosaic that are
completely abstract and do not resemble
humans, animals or mythological events,
Adding to the site's uniqueness is the fact
that Mitla continued to be inhabited even
often the Spanish conquest.
